All About a Lexile

What is a Lexile?

Lexile measures a book's text difficulty. Lexile measures are based on how difficult a text is to comprehend, the word frequency and sentence length.

How to pick a book using the Lexile?

The Lexile measure is a good starting point in your book-selection process, but you should always consider these other factors when making a decision about which book to choose.
  • Content of the book
  • Age of the student
  • Interests of the student
  • The design of the book
A book in a child's Lexile range doesn't mean the child will want to read the book.  Make sure you start with the Lexile and then include the other factors listed above.

How does this all help my child?

When a child's Lexile is known, then teachers and parents can match the texts that will maximize learning and growth for the child.
